Deputy Willard Griggs Memorial Service

(Troy, New York)  On Friday, May 19, 2006 at 12:00 noon, the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a memorial service at the gravesite of Deputy Willard Griggs.  Deputy Griggs is the only known officer of the Sheriff’s Office to die in the line of duty.  Deputy Griggs died on August 2, 1869, as a result of gunshot wounds received while attempting to execute a warrant in a long running dispute between tenant farmers and landowners, which became known as the Anti-Rent Wars.  Deputy Griggs was buried in the sand Lake Union Cemetery.

The grave marker was recently restored by members of the Sheriff’s Office.
